So the big education speech was Tuesday and I planned to have you read it then. Without getting into politics, what is your response to all the hooplah? Would you want your children watching the speech? Why or why not? Next week some Arlington students are being bused to the new Cowboys stadium to hear former President Bush and his wife Laura speak about education. Yet, Arlington was a district that chose not to show Tuesday's speech. Thoughts?
Here is a link to Tuesday's student address:

I would have no problem letting my own child hear this! This is exactly what our students need to hear! It goes right along with the whole "It's not up to me, it's up to you" thing. They can have very supportive parents and teachers trying their best to make them successful, but at the end of the day, they've got to want it and strive to do their best. I think his examples of people who tried again and again even when faced with obstacles was very inspiring. The students need to hear that! They make their future! As for the schools in Arlington...that's a great experience to go and hear the Bush's speak, but I think the kids should hear it from the president also.
ReplyDeleteThe Arlington thing was set up a long time ago and The Bushes are only one of the many speakers. The press just took that and ran with it because of the timing. Otherwise I doubt we would have ever heard about it. I understand what President Obama is trying to do and the speech was actually pretty good. I do think that kids get alot of that talk at school. Maybe a better plan would be to have them watch with the parents and have a serious discussion with their parents and have parents set some ground rules early. Who know...maybe it would have an impact coming from the President???
ReplyDeleteI think anything involving politics is iffy. I'm not opposed to students hearing the speech I just think maybe it should have been shown in the evening so the parents could make the decision whether to watch or not. Then we could avoid all the mess that went along with it. The only problem with that is some may not have that opportunity unless they are at school. I think it was a good message.
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI was concerned when the district went back/forth on their decision to show it or not. Most of my parents aren't online and were not able to see the printed copy of his speech or what MISD said about it first. When we watched it, my kids focused less on "political beliefs" and just heard "the president" telling them to stay in school and try their hardest. They were more motivated just because he spoke to them! I do wish parents were given letters and an opportunity to come to the school and watch it first. They could then decide (politics aside) to let their child watch it. They would also have been able to discuss it with them to encourage students/parents to value education more.
ReplyDeleteMy kiddos were the same Lynda. They have no concern with politics, but most of them do hold the President in high regard and did key on on the fact that it is important for them to stay in school and try their best. I wish more people in the spotlight would shift their focus to such important educational issues.
