Into the Volcano

Don't be scared of this graphic novel! Don Wood spent 10 years illustrating this book. It has won numerous literary awards. Graphic novels fly off the shelf in almost all libraries. So why do teachers dislike them so much? Why do kids like them so much? How can you use this to draw in reluctant readers? How can you use this in content areas?

  1. I think the reason some students don't like this type of book is because it is so busy. They are trying to figure out what they need to read. Some kids enjoy it because they really like all the speech bubbles. I think this type of book has a lot of information and once kids get into it they will enjoy it. Great illustrations!

Even I feel the text has many great things to offer, the length may overwhelm kiddos and the layout of the pictures and text is confusing and somewhat distracting while reading. I think by modeling reading this type of text that your students will better understand the layout and then they can interact with text individually. I think the kids really enjoyed the font and illustrations involved in the text!

  3. To be honest with you, I have not read this book yet. I gave it to one of my resource students to read and he is LOVING it!!!! Graphic novels are overwhelming for me, but I love it when my students want to read them, because there are SOOOO many words, lots of really good pictures, and they have to use context clues from both the words and the pictures while they're reading!! I'm a big fan of my kiddos reading them!!!
