A Couple of Boys have the Best Week Ever


Maybe Ronda is right and I LOVE this book because I have boys. I read this class with Mr. Escobar's class and they really enjoyed it. I wanted them to do a main idea on chart paper, but we ran out of time. However, we did talk about the main idea, author's purpose, and the Caldecott Medal. They reall like the page that said the boys learned lots of new vocabulary words from Eamon's Grandpa Bill. Sixth graders figured out that meant bad words. What did you and your kids think? What did you/could you teach using this book?

  1. My kids really enjoyed the book. We talked a lot about the speech bubbles and how important it was to read EVERYTHING on the page and look at the pictures or you might lose some of the meaning. We discussed how the book said that James only brought a couple of items, but if you looked at the picture you could see he really bought a lot. The text also said that they enjoyed the beach together, but the pictures and bubbles showed that they did it from inside. Very cute book! I could tell which kids understand sarcasm!

  2. Since we have been working on text features, I sort of carried it over for this book. We talked about how the pictures help with the pictures in your head. I read a few pages to them first and then we talked about the pictures they had in their heads. Then I showed them the pictures, which were very different from what they thought..the party page and the being sad his mom left. We also had a long discussion about sarcasm, which is hard for my esl kids. We also talked about how when you write you need to be very explicit so the reader has the right picture in their head. Cute book!

  3. This book reminds me a little of the lay out of the Magic School Bus books. they are really busy and you have to read everything to get the full meaning. I think this is a great book to use for prediction.

  4. I read this book to second graders. They had heard it before but seem to like it again. They loved being able to tell me what was going to happen next and were pretty good at it! I like that book.

  5. I used this book for background knowledge. My kids really loved it, because they were able to relate to all the different things that happened in the book. We also used it to give us ideas for Writer's Workshop.

  6. We made connection about spending the night at our grandparents house or other relatives homes and how we felt before, during and after our visit. My students made a text to text connection and compared it to comic books and The Magic Schoolbus!!!!

  7. My kids loved this book. It reminded them when they go to their grandparents or uncles house to spend the night. This book is full of pictures and captions and keep the readers really busy and want to read everything to understand the whole story. Great to make connections

  8. I use this book to work in background knowledge, My students were into the book, and also we work together and the begining middle and end. I love this book. The ilustrations were really nice.

  9. I used it to make text to text connections. They were able to make a lot of connections especially after coming back from summer vacation. I also used it to discuss captions. The boys really enjooyed it.

  10. My students enjoyed this book in the library, but I read it to them again and asked them to comment on things they noticed. Several were surprised that the pictures didn't match what the text said. I tied it in with the lesson on previewing the text and how important the visual clues were to the story. We discussed the life lesson at the end and my students came to the conclusion that the boys finally learned about "nature" on their own investigation (after the grandparents were snoring loudly.) This also tied in with the SAT word "responsibility" and how we can be self-learners.

  11. I used this book to sequence. We used it with a Beg, mid. end lesson and actually, due to time, had to break it up. They were begging to finish it! I love that! They got such a kick out of the pictures, and were able to recall from day to day the details in the sequence of events.

  12. This book was so full of ideas, pictures and text. I actually read it to a couple of classes twice and they really enjoyed it. They were predicting what could happen next. We talked a bit about where penguins live and how they wouldn't enjoy the beach where Bill and Pam lived.

  13. I used this book with my students as a read aloud to predict what would happen next. The students love it because we talked about the inferencing of what it really meant when they learned "new vocabulary"

  14. WOW....love the font and illustrations in this text. This text lends itself to many reading skills, inferencing, predicting, character traits. What a fun book! One of my favorites...

  15. My class loved this book!!! Every time they get an opportunity to get it from my book display, it is gone. They really connected with the boys and loved the pictures.

  16. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! The pictures are great and it kinda keeps you on your toes trying to see what's gonna happen next. This is a great picture book to use for story plot, setting/resolution, and analyzing characters. I'm gonna use this book before we start our novel study to model those different concepts!
