Chicken Cheeks

I know Mrs. Hill's class loved the book because they called and told me. What did your kids think? How did you incorporate you weekly student expectations? Any great lesson ideas? Will you use this book again in the future?

  1. Great book! My kids were astonished when I told them that we were going to read a book with NO complete sentences! Of course they loved all of the new vocabulary they learned! We did a lot of predicting using the pictures to guide us. At the end I had the students make some of the phrases into complete sentences to describe the picture and what was happening in the book.

  2. We first wrote predictions (I should have let you read them they were so cute.) The next day we did a summary of the story (Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then) They did such a good job! It was a perfect book to introduce summary. They also loved the homophones!!!

  3. My kids did not get this book. The synonyms went right over their heads. After trying to explain a few times I just gave up and we predicted. They were very good at that and even got the ending pretty close. The ants were their favorite part. It turned out to just be a fun read.

  5. My kids didn't seem to get the book from the beginning. Only a few were able to point out important things happening in the book. By the end, they all seemed to get it.

  7. My kids like this book they really liked the pictures and really started to make predictions about the story without me telling them what to do. I thought that was very good, the book seemed to make them wonder about the things that were going to happen next.

  9. My students had trouble with the vocabulary. Therefore, I used it for beginning, middle, and end. I told them that we would really look at the picture to help us understand. They did great. Most of them understood what the book was about. They loved the pictures.

  10. My kids (ESL mostly) had trouble getting that they talking about different kinds of "bottoms" but once I pointed that out, they enjoyed the book. We made predictions, talked about rhyming words and beginning sounds, watched the ants and the characters' expressions... At the end we talked about the life lesson of working together as a team (animals) and working smart (ants.)

  11. We were able to discuss several different things with this book. We discussed beg., mid., and end, as well predicting and vocabulary. My kids were laughing through the whole book. They loved pointing out the rhymes and alliteration. We were even able to bring in a bit of cause and effect, which is a hard concept with young ones!

  12. The students at both of my schools loved this book! They couldn't believe we were going to read a book about "behinds". They caught on to the rhyming words quickly and enjoyed all the different terms. We laughed our way all through the book!
