Our first book is going to be Yummy Lucy Cousins.
I choose this book because every classroom needs a great book of fairy tales and this one came highly recommended by Peggy Sharp.
Ideas to use for this book:
1. Recipes- have students choose a recipe to go with a fairy tale. Kids can write a how to with pictures. Make something YUMMY in class together. Create a class cookbook.
2. Circle Map on things that are yummy.
3. Tree Map of story elements.
4. Plot diagram.
5. Paper bag book.

I enjoyed using this book as part of my Opera Unit in music. The story of Little Red Riding Hood was used as a group project. Each group used stick-y notes to show the order of the story.
ReplyDeleteYummy is a fun book to read. I had forgotten that some of the fairy tales have a gruesome ending. We read two versions of Three Little Pigs and compared and contrasted the two stories.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the book because these are fairy tales from my youth. Some of the stories are different from the ones I had heard. Some of them are a little more vicious than what I remembered.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoyed reading the original versions of fairy tales in Yummy then comparing them to drama versions written in script form. The kids discovered that narrative literature takes numerous forms but still has all the same literary elements. Of course, we then acted out (sort of) the short plays as Reader's Theater. Kids had a lot of fun! The versions in Yummy were written simply and easy to work with.
ReplyDeleteI also love this book because it was so simple and true to the original Grimm's versions.

ReplyDeleteI love this book and the illustrations! Altho' it may be a bit more gruesome than we remember, the students enjoyed acting out the stories and trying out different voices. Can't wait to read the rest of the book!.
ReplyDeleteMy kids really enjoyed the chance to be creative and artistic when given the chance to write about and illustrate what Goldilocks did when she came into our classroom. It was a very familiar story to most of them. They were begging me to read more. Will be a great incentive! : )
ReplyDeleteBoth my students and I loved this book. We compared the Three Little Pigs story on a double bubble map. We talked about how there are many version of fairy tales.
ReplyDeleteI used this book in small groups and the kids really enjoyed the book. Especially the illustrations.
